Apple Details Apple Arcade Gaming Service

Everyone is getting n on the streaming game, err, game

Apple’s September Showcase has come and gone, and it was pretty much a dud in terms of devices and felt like Apple was playing catch-up in everything else. The one thing that interested us here at GAMBIT was the few details we got about their new Apple Arcade streaming service.

Joining the like of Stadia and a number of already existing cloud-based game streaming services, Apple Arcade has that Apple flair. This means it’ll be overpriced and underwhelming when compared to everything else. As someone who had the first-gen iPod, stood in line for the first iPhone and iPad, it blows my mind how lame the company feels nowadays.

Now that they are turning into another streaming company, Apple Arcade isn’t wowing anyone with its offerings. Sure, I see this as something to entice those already in the Apple ecosystem and to keep them from making the move to Google, it still feels years behind everyone else.

During their presentation, they featured a number of games including Frogger, Shinsekai Into The Depths, and Sayonara Wild Hearts. They also noted that there are 11 other games on the way for the service. Still, those they mentioned are franchises in the highest of demand. I loved me some Chu-Chu Rocket, but a new entry into the puzzle series isn’t going to be a killer app.

But at least the cost isn’t going to break the bank. Apple Arcade launches on September 19th and a family plan will only cost you $5 a month. You can also try a month free to see if it’s something for you. It’s not for me as non-physical games are a hard pass. Convenience is one thing but controlling the market and killing your games when servers go down isn’t my cup of tea.
