Coming Up on Netflix in 2021

Netflix

Once upon a time, people used to eagerly scour the upcoming movie releases and plan a trip to their local cinema around the most anticipated films.

Whilst that is still the case for some, online streaming service Netflix now provides just as much excitement. Their immediate 2021 schedule has just dropped, and there is plenty on there to keep viewers entertained. Instead of heading out for the evening, get the soda and popcorn in, because Netflix is raising the game in the coming months.

From dramas to sitcoms, spin-offs to science fiction, they have got every genre covered with films to keep you entertained for one night, or binge-worthy series set to keep you on the couch for much longer than you might anticipate. Here are some of the headline drops over the coming months.

The Irregulars

First up is yet another Sherlock Holmes spin-off, this time featuring a group of misfit teenagers solving paranormal crimes in modern-day London. The relative success of their film Enola Holmes last year has doubtless led the streaming giant to produce more Holmes canon programs, with The Irregulars running for eight episodes. It drops on March 26 and Henry Lloyd-Hughes from Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire stars, alongside newcomer Thaddea Graham.

Fatherhood

Comedian Kevin Hart has just penned an exclusive three-film deal with Netflix, and viewers can warm-up for that by taking in his upcoming drama Fatherhood. It debuts on June 18, just in time for Father’s Day, and is a change of direction for Hart as he explores a more serious and involved role. Poker.org explain how Hart is the best-paid comedian in the world, but the laughs will be few and far between in this touching interpretation, based upon the 2011 memoir Two Kisses for Maddy: A Memoir of Loss and Love.

Dad Stop Embarrassing Me!

Another comedian turned actor, Jamie Foxx is also dropping onto Netflix this year. He is playing a sitcom Dad, reports Ew.com, staying very much in the comedy character which launched him to superstardom. Like Hart, he too has strayed from the genre that made him famous, not least in White House Down, Django Unchained and Law Abiding Citizen, but he is going back to his roots when this show lands on April 14. Kyla-Drew stars as the teenage daughter who moves in with business executive and bachelor Foxx, with plenty of hilarity ensues.

Thunder Force

Thunder Force is an action-comedy starring Melissa McCarthy and Octavia Spencer, two childhood friends that are as unlikely superheroes as you will find. One invents a formula to give them extraordinary powers, which sees them fighting crime across Chicago. It is a film, 105 minutes of pure comedy, and drops on April 9.

Shadow and Bone

Game of Thrones has a lot to answer for, with yet another big-budget fantasy on the way. Fresh from the success of Carnival Row, they are set to introduce Shadow and Bone, set in a mythical world of perpetual darkness. Scheduled for April 23, it stars another relative newcomer, Jessie Mei Li, as well as Ben Barnes from Marvel series The Punisher, and Daisy Head, aka Grace Atwood from Guilt.
