Court Rules Chinese Movie Infringed On SNK’s Mai Shiranui Design

SNK Sues Chinese Movie

All the way back in the year 2018 in the pre-pandemic timeline, a movie hot Chinese theaters called Warrior Angels. It billed itself as a fantasy comedy and its cast resembled characters from SNK’s King of Fighters game series. And by resemble I mean look exactly like them.

China and copyright have a strange relationship but this time a Beijing court has ruled that the film did, in fact, violate the copyright belonging to SNK and awarding the company over $100,000 in damages. The ruling also states the film must be pulled from sale and distribution.

While China hasn’t been the best with enforcing copyright (just look at Aliexpress and Wish for evidence of that) on this occasion things were a little different. SNK is actually now a Chinese owned company as it was acquired back in 2015 by a conglomerate of Chinese companies.
