Crossplay Is Coming To Overwatch

Overwatch

It’s been some time since the subject was truly broached, but it seems Overwatch is now getting crossplay. Now, friends who play on different types of machines (consoles, PC) can play together. That said, there are some stipulations, as Game Director Aaron Keller covers in the video below.

Essentially, while queuing in competitive will always place console players in games with other console players, and PC players with other PC players, (and for competitive, you can not form a mix-and-match party of console and PC players) in other modes this isn’t the case. Queuing up solo in other modes on console with crossplay enabled, you’ll only run into other console players. But, if you add a friend into your party who is playing on PC, you’ll encounter other mixed groups when you play, because you’re now in the PC player match pool. And if you’re on PC, you have no option; crossplay is on ( and cannot be disabled) and your queue will have the possibility for you to encounter console players. There’s more information in the official FAQ.

This is a really… complicated system for this feature. But the overall gist of it is that, for console players, you have to seek out a situation in which you’ll be playing against PC players, and PC players are probably going to run into console players regardless.

In other news from this update, the friends lists have been merged, meaning you can add friends from all over the globe, with the exception of China which still has its own region. And all of these changes will seemingly apply to Overwatch 2.
