EA Shutting Down Mobile Tetris Games

EA is giving up the ghost on all its Tetris games for mobile devices. Already gone from Android are Tetris 2011 and Tetris Blitz, a game I quite enjoyed on the go.

Now on April 21, the App Store will say goodbye to the Tetris app which includes access to Tetris Blitz, Tetris 2011 and Tetris Premium.

No one really knows why EA is saying goodbye to Tetris on mobiles but it’s likely to do with licensing issues. EA is in the habit of having a monopoly over rights (see Madden for an example) and since they are no longer hold exclusive right over Tetris they might have been more than happy to simply let it go.

While I played and knew many people who wasted time with Tetris Blitz, there are a number of alternatives on mobiles from publishers other than EA. The Tetris Company itself will be releasing Tetris Royale to mobiles later this year for fans to show who the real Tetris master is.

In a statement posted to the App Store, EA wrote:

Hello Fans, We have had an amazing journey with you so far but sadly, it is time to say goodbye. As of April 21, 2020, EA’s Tetris® app will be retired, and will no longer be available to play. Kindly note that you will still be able to enjoy the game and use any existing in-game items until April 21, 2020. We hope you have gotten many hours of enjoyment out of this game and we appreciate your ongoing support. Thank you!
