Emily Blunt to star in Mary Poppins Returns

Mary Poppins Returns

A spoonful of sugar will help this news about Marry Poppins Returns go down. It looks like the 1964 Disney classic is finally getting a followup in Mary Poppins Returns. The film is slated to hit theaters December 25th, 2018.

The film stars Emily Blunt (Into the Woods) as the titular Marry Poppins and Lin-Manuel Miranda (Hamilton, In the Heights) as Jack, a new character to the series billed as a lamplighter. The film will be directed by Rob Marshall (Into the Woods) with a screenplay to be written by David Magee (Life of Pi).

Taking place in Depression-era London, the film follows the Banks children, who are now grown, and see’s Mary come bank into their life after a personal loss in the family. Mary Poppins will once again show them the joy that life can bring by having all sorts of adventures and singing.

Director Rob Marshall stated that he was “truly humbled and honored to be asked by Disney to bring P.L. Travers’ further adventures to the screen.”

He continued, saying “The iconic original film means so much to me personally, and I look forward to creating an original movie musical that can bring Mary Poppins, and her message that childlike wonder can be found in even the most challenging of times, to a whole new generation.”

“Through her unique magical skills, and with the aid of her friend Jack, (Mary Poppins) helps the family rediscover the joy and wonder missing in their lives,” Disney stated in a press release.

Marry Poppins is a beloved classic, so creating a sequel is surely to ruffle some feather. We can only wait and see how this movie develops.
