Final Fantasy VII Remake Will Be Episodic

Final Fantasy VII Remake

A lot of people are excited for the upcoming Final Fantasy VII remake. Fans have been demanding Sony make this happen since the PlayStation 3 was shown off all those many years ago. Now we know that the game is coming out, and it’s looking pretty fantastic. While many are taking issue with the complete abandoning of the games combat system –something that I think was a reason the game was special– many younger fans are still stoked for the release.

Now another issue has come up, this time being presented by the game’s director. The Final Fantasy VII Remake is going to be presented in episodic format.  Sure, many games have been going this route, most notably the Telltale adventure series, as well as other, mostly indie releases, but this seems a bit odd for a major release. While I’m sure we will get a complete collection sometime down the road, it still feels like the team isn’t wanting to just put out a complete package.

Speaking to Dengeki Online, and translated by Gematsu, FFVII Remake director Tetsuya Nomura stated that,

“We’d have to cut some parts, and additional parts would come in few, so rather than remake the game as a full volume, we decided to do multiple parts.”

That’s fair enough, but with the amount of time the team has had to put something together, even in this current console generation, why would it need to be summarized if they release a full volume? Final Fantasy is a big game, but it came out as a single volume without being broken up, even during a time when games simply weren’t that large. Look, this is no judgement on the game itself, but it just feels a little weird to break the game up. Then again this really depends on the length of each episode and how much each will cost us. With the revamped combat system I do have a feeling the game will be quite a bit shorter in length.

In the end I still think the idea of remakes are pointless.

What do you all think?
