Godzilla’s Gareth Edwards to direct Star Wars spin-off

It’s been known for a while that in addition to a new trilogy, starting with next year’s Episode VII: The Ancient Fear, Disney and Lucasfilm plan on releasing at least three standalone Star Wars films. Leaked information from Hasbro suggests that one will be about Boba Fett (duh), one about Han Solo (really??) and one, called Red Five, which may be about Luke Skywalker during the Battle of Yavin. Other reports have also suggested that there could be a Yoda film, and fuck it, let’s get a Salacious Crumb movie and a Walk the Line-style biopic about Figrin D’an and the Modal Nodes.

These guys.

Anyway, that’s a long way to go to get to the actual story here, which is this: the first Star Wars spin-off has found a director, and it’s Godzilla‘s Gareth Edwards. Edwards has had an amazing career trajectory; in 2010 he spent $500,000 on a little-seen film called Monsters, then he got handed the keys to Godzilla, and now he gets to direct fucking Star Wars.

Deadline reports that the film’s release date is December 16, 2016, so it’s likely that it will be Boba Fett. Or, much more likely, The Rise of Boba Fett: Episode I – The Birth of the Mandalorian, or some shit like that. No casting has been announced, but let’s start breathlessly speculating anyway, because there is no way in hell that Temuerah Morrison is going to get the role.
