Guy Pearce to play Johnny Depp’s brother

Guy Pearce is one of the most underrated actors working today. It looked like after Memento he was going to be confined to bad movie hell, with appearances in The Time Machine and Bedtime Stories, but he seems to have rescued himself, spending the better part of the last decade doing solid work in movies like The Proposition, Iron Man 3, and Lawless, which I think should have garnered him an Oscar nomination. Now, according to Variety, he’s in final negotiations to play Johnny Depp’s brother in Black Mass.

Black Mass tells the story of Whitey Bulger, one of the most vicious members of the Boston mob, who later turned informant for the FBI and went on the lam, eluding authorities until 2011. He was also the inspiriation for Jack Nicholson’s Frank Costello in The Departed. Black Mass is set to be directed by Scott Cooper (Crazy Heart, Out of the Furnace) and will also star Joel Edgerton (Warrior), so I am officially excited.

Here’s what Whitey Bulger looked like in the 60s:

So picture that with three necklaces, eye liner, four scarves, and leather bracelets, and that’s probably how Johnny Depp will look in Black Mass.
