To be fair, I have no idea what they’re doing, either.
Warner Bros. has been doing just about everything possible to course correct from their first few DC movies. Which is almost applaudable, if not for the fact that being in this position from the get go is something to be avoided. Part of the problem, though, is how they’re handling some of these; Jared Leto is the Joker in Suicide Squad and the distant Joker and Harley Quinn movie, but not in the Martin Scorsese produced film.
And that leaves Leto a little bewildered. To be fair, it’d be nice for all of us if they announced something to straighten their canon out. Just say that the Scorsese film is supposed to be Elseworlds or something; that’d make some of this easier to follow. Hell, speaking of, the animated films are adapting Gotham by Gaslight. Having some sort of label to help everyone sort this stuff out in lieu of it being planned out properly in the first place might be the best step forward right now.
