Mark Millar wants John Cena to star as Superior in movie adaptation

Superior John Cena

Mark Millar has a long history in the world of comic books. He has a string of hits under his belt over the years, but most people probably know him best from his part in Marvel’s Civil War comic arc. Now, I personally think Civil War is complete shite, but it was still a huge arc that manged to get transformed into a huge film.

I personally really enjoy his other work away from the big two, and many of these have been previously adapted into films. He was responsible for creating Kick-Ass, Wanted, and mostly recently adapted into a film Kingsman: The Secret Service. But now Millar is pushing for a lead in the upcoming Superior film that has been stuck in development hell for ages.

Superior tells the tale of a young boy that is diagnosed with MS. He is a huge fan of the character Superior from his favorite comic book and when he meets a monkey space demon (yup!) he gets one wish. The boy uses this wish to become Superior and gains all his powers and weaknesses. This is where the book really takes off as we have a little kid in the body of a Superman type being. It’s a really solid book that you should pick up.

The book was published under Marvel’s creator own branch known as Icon Comics. The film rights were picked up by director Matthew Vaughn who most recently served as director for Kingsman: The Secret Service.  Fox would then pick up the rights and the project would fall into limbo because, you know, Fox.

But recently Millar made waves by posting to Twitter that he would love to see WWE Superstar John Cena play the Superhero in the upcoming adaptation.  This would only make sense as John Cena has never lost a match in some 10-years wrestling in the WWE. Kidding aside, Millar said that after watching Cena play a role in Trainwreck, he requested for him to play the character to those in charge.

This doesn’t mean the wrestler will be playing the hero, but he has had a number of staring roles in a bunch of WWE films. As an action star he does fairly well and has even had a few of his action flicks pull in some decent numbers. Here’s to hoping something happens, but as this isn’t a Marvel or DC property, odds are slim for it every happening, especially not at Fox with the issues they are having with their heroes.
