Microsoft Ceases Production of the Kinect

Kinect

What is dead may never die, but rises again, harder and stronger.

Yes, Microsoft is killing off the Kinect. After seven years, the dream of a Jetsons-like entertainment center is passing into the great beyond. Even though it’s still popular with the DIY crwod for projects and art.

But don’t worry, all that tech isn’t going to waste. The same tech in the Microsoft Kinect is also the cornerstone of iPhone X’s Face ID. Apple bought the Israeli startup that developed the Kinect sensor, PrimaSense, in 2013.

Ah, but Microsoft hasn’t written off the idea either:

Manufacturing for Kinect for Xbox One has ended but it is not the end of the journey for the technology […] Kinect continues to delight tens of millions of Xbox owners and Kinect innovations live on in Xbox One, Windows 10, Cortana, Windows Holographic and future technologies.

– Microsoft spokeseperson from this Gizmodo article

So a toast to Kinect; you offered no physical feedback, making you terrible for your primary purpose. But you shall live on in the hearts and minds of those that tried to play an actual game with you. No matter how hard they’ll try to forget.
