MoviePass Returns Nationwide

MoviePass

It’s out of beta and I can’t escape it.

Last year, MoviePass announced a return. This year, it has seemingly completed said return.

They opened their new service up nationwide just ahead of Memorial Day weekend. And, uh, it’s a complicated thing. As they said a year ago, it functions on a point system; your plan provides you with a certain number of credits per month, and the credit cost of certain movies varies; usually, at the start of their release window (first week, say), when they’re in high demand, they cost more credits. Each subscription tier offers different numbers of credits: Basic offers 34 credits for $10/month, Standard 72 credits for $20/month, Premium 113 credits for $30/month, and Pro 640 credits for $40/month. You can rollover credits for two months, after which they expire. For frame of reference, the Pro tier’s 640 credits equates out to around 30 movies depending on theater and when you go to see them.

Southern California and New York, however, sort of get a worse deal. Depending on the plan, they have to pay an extra $10-$20 for the exact same services. While there is an app, MoviePass issues you a card just like they used to within 10-15 days of opening an account with them. They claim to have over 4000 participating theaters nationwide for their service; good luck sifting through the list to find one near you, they’re only sorted by state. Surprisingly, however, a not-inconsiderable number of AMC theaters are on there.

While a tad bit convoluted, the new model is definitely healthier than the old, unlimited movies for $10 model. Time will tell if things hold up this go round. Currently all of the Web3 stuff and the whole eye tracking thing are nowhere to be seen, so here’s hoping that died in favor of offering a solid service to consumers. It might even funnel more people to theaters this Summer.
