The Navy Plans to use Xbox 360 Controllers on Submarines

Hopefully they don’t need that awful D-Pad for anything.

No joke. The Navy plans to use Xbox 360 controllers on its submarines.

Specifically, as a replacement for $38,000 proprietary joysticks used to control periscopes. They have a lower learning curve for service members to boot. And the best part? Xbox 360 controllers are everywhere. If it breaks, you don’t even need to bother with repairs.

Lockheed Martin apparently came up with the idea at their classified research lab. The lab is supposedly dedicated to working with active personnel to find uses for familiar, off the shelf technology in the military. Still, it’s surprising they went with the Xbox 360 controller over the more recent Xbox One controller.
