One Piece Live-Action Series Headed to Netflix

I think I’ll just blame this shit on Blackbeard, or maybe Rocks

Netflix has greenlit a live-action series based on One Piece from the same people (Tomorrow Studios) that are bringing you live-action Cowboy Bebop.

THe 10 episode series does have Shueisha involved, but I genuinely doubt that’ll mean much. Because even Japan knows that some of their most popular properties really don’t have the same following overseas, and One Piece is one of them. In the US, it takes a backseat to Dragon Ball and Naruto, and the One Piece dub is practically 500 episodes behind the Japanese release. That’s not even a joke; Episode 919 aired last week, while the English dub is finally starting the Punk Hazard arc, which started at episode 579.

Steve Maeda (Lost, The X-Files) will be the showrunner, executive producer, and writer for the show. Matt Owens (Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., Luke Cage) will also write and executive produce. Rounding out the executive producers are Tomorrow Studios’ own Marty Adelstein and Becky Clements, as well as One Piece author Eiichiro Oda.

Welcome to Impel Down, One Piece fans. Enjoy the poison.
