PlayStation Apparently Has A Game Preservation Team Now

Apparently, that startup always scared the crap out of some people.

Game preservation is an important thing. The day will come where all of the machines will stop functioning, all of the media the games were stored on will have rotted away and ceased to function. So, it’s nice to hear that PlayStation seems to have a team dedicated to game preservation now.

The news comes via one Garrett Fredley, who just joined PlayStation as a senior build engineer. Prior to this, Fredley worked for mobile developer Kabam. Excited about his new position, he tweeted out the following:

He went into more detail in a LinkedIn post:

Today is my first day as a Senior Build Engineer for PlayStation, working as one of their initial hires for the newly created Preservation team!

Game Preservation was my first career passion. It was my first foray into the world of Software Engineering / Dev Ops, and into a world that so many are unaware of. I was just a novice back then, contributing any way I could regardless of my inexperience. Now, I’m back to it, no longer the novice I once was.

Thank you Mike Bishop and the team for bringing me on board for this adventure. Let’s go and ensure our industry’s history isn’t forgotten!

There’s been no official word from PlayStation on this team as of yet. That said, it’s nice to see companies at least try to take this sort of thing seriously. And it may have something to do with the upcoming changes to PlayStation Plus as well; they likely want to expand beyond the 700 titles they have available at the start.

The other side of it all, though, is that there are limits to what one company can actually do in this regard. Xbox stopped their preservation program somewhat short, simply due to the fact that there were only so many Xbox games that other companies were willing to play ball with. In that regard, it falls to others to do that work.
