‘REZ’ wins best VR game at The Game Awards

Sony has already pulled back on its expectations for the VR because as I said time and time again, the platform is the next motion control gimmick. If you don’t puke, can deal with the low resolution, or can deal with paying $30 for a bunch of tech demos then maybe it’s for you.

At The Game Awards 2016 last night, Enhance Games’ Rez Infinite won Best VR Game, a brand new category added for the first time this year (and possibly last). The title was nominated alongside four other titles, Batman: Arkham VR, EVE Valkyrie, Job Simulator and Thumper.

Released exclusively for the PS4 system and PlayStation VR on October 13, 2016, Rez Infinite has garnered some nice reviews because let’s face it,  REZ was already a great game before moving to VR, and is currently the highest-rated PS VR launch title on Metacritic at 89. Highlights also include the Gold Award from Official PlayStation Magazine UK, an ‘Essential’ from Eurogamer.net and a Platinum from Famitsu.

Rez Infinite was announced last December at the PlayStation Experience 2015 event. Tetsuya Mizuguchi, founder/CEO of Enhance Games and creator of Rez, took to the stage in a custom made ‘Synesthesia Suit’ and PS VR head mounted display to showcase the title — the ultimate version of the beloved psychedelic rail-shooter adventure Rez — which was originally released in 2001 by Sega.  Now, 15 years later, fully remastered with VR support and all-new level “Area X,” the latest form of Rez is infinitely improved and evolved for a new generation of hardware and its gamers.

“When the original Rez was released, it was unlike any other game and difficult to explain. You had to play it, hear it, feel it in order to really get it,” says Mizuguchi.  “Then people called it visionary, revolutionary and ahead of its time…but my true goal was always to bring Rez to life in VR.  Rez Infinite is the multi-sensory ‘synesthesia’ experience I’ve wanted to create from the very beginning and I couldn’t be more excited for this award.”

I love REZ, don’t get me wrong, i still have the original on the Dreamcast, but when an old game not built around new technology does better than the ones that do, then we should think twice about the technology itself. Still, if you have a PSVR I do recommend REZ!
