Santa Claus getting gritty reboot (no, seriously)

I don’t know how to feel about this. I think it’s awesome?

According to Deadline, Sony is moving forward with Winter’s Knight, which is described as a “Viking-mythology-tinged origin story of St. Nick and Christmas.” Read that again – it had “Viking” and “Christmas” in the same sentence.

This idea isn’t totally loony, though; Santa does have origins in Norse mythology, and Winter’s Knight is based on the book The Life and Adventures of Santa Claus by L. Frank Baum (and since it’s Baum, there’s probably around a dozen sequels, which is good news for Sony).

What’s most exciting, to me, is the people behind Winter’s Knight: Kon-Tiki directors Joachim Ronning and Espen Sandberg, who are also working on a Marco Polo series for Netflix, as well as – sigh – the new Pirates of the Caribbean movie. So this could turn out pretty cool! Or it could be the proverbial lump of coal (hahaha, NAILED IT).

Who do you think should play Santa? The good money is on Russell Crowe, because obviously. Maybe Ray Winstone, if Ronning and Sandberg want more of a bloated, cockney St. Nick. And while we’re at it, we might as well start casting the gritty origin stories of the Tooth Fairy and the Easter Bunny.
