Shirley won’t be returning to Community

Man, Community is a freakin’ sieve at this point. TV Guide is reporting that Yvette Nicole Brown, who plays Shirley Bennett, will not be returning to the show’s sixth season, which will premiere on Yahoo! Screen. She’s decided to spend time with her reportedly ailing father, which you can’t really fault her for.

Add Brown to the list of those Community has lost, which includes Chevy Chase, Donald Glover (who left to focus on rapping), Jonathan Banks (who will have a recurring role on Better Call Saul), and maybe John Oliver (nothing has been confirmed, but I imagine writing and filming Last Week Tonight is pretty time-consuming).

Brown told TV Guide:

My dad needs daily care and he needs me,” Brown says. “The idea of being away 16 hours a day for five months, I couldn’t do it. It was a difficult decision for me to make, but I had to choose my dad.”

Obviously we wish the best for Brown and her father, but this is still a bummer. The Greendale Seven is now the Greendale Four. Vulture says that Community is looking to cast two new roles, so we’ll keep you updated on that as well.
