Stephen King’s It has a new director

The long-gestating adaptation of Stephen King’s It – which New Line swears will be two R-rated films, even though there’s no way they’ll stick to that – lost its director, True Detective‘s Cary Joji Fukunaga, some time ago over budgetary disputes. After that the film was put on hiatus, and it looked dead in the water, which would be unfortunate (even though I think It would work best as an HBO miniseries).

But it looks like New Line has found a new man for the job, Mama‘s Andy Muscietti. Mama was creepy as shit, if a little rote, so if nothing else Muscietti can handle the visuals of It, which are a huge part of the story. As of now, Will Poulter is still attached as Pennywise, although it’s unclear how Muscietti’s involvement will affect Poulter’s. (Poulter could conceivably do a fine job, but I’m much more partial to the first name suggested for the role: Ben Mendelsohn.)

We’ll bring you more on this as it develops. Thanks to The AV Club for the heads up.
