Steven Universe “Sadie’s Song”

Talent contest? Talent contest. This episode of Steven Universe has a talent contest.

I loved how quickly Lars brushes off Steven at the beginning of this one. He doesn’t even say anything; he just gets this sour look on his face and walks off. Which is okay because Steven is oblivious to things like that. When he notices that Sadie isn’t behind the counter at the Big Donut, he checks the back room to find her singing as she restocks the shelves. Impressed by his ability to sing along to pop music on the radio, Steven convinces her to enter the Beachapalooza talent contest he’s been handing out flyers for.

Haha, Sadie's a basement dweller! I wish I had a basement...
Ha ha, Sadie’s a basement dweller! …I wish I had a basement…

It’s pretty much confirmed that Barbara the mail lady is Sadie’s mother. Her over enthusiasm for everything her daughter tries is also readily apparent. You know, in case the giant mound of stuffed animals Sadie doesn’t really care about didn’t tip you off.

This face really says it all. No context.

Much like Steven, Barb’s imagination runs wild all over Sadie’s decision. Before long, She and Steven are making all of the decisions for Sadie’s performance. To a musical montage, no less. And neither of them notice how progressively miserable Sadie becomes over the course of the whole thing.

Since Mr. Smiley is running the whole thing, he’s also MC-ing. That man has nothing but the most insane series of jobs, and none of them are treating people to his classic stand-up. He seriously accounts for half of the businesses in that town. I don’t think he sleeps. Anyway, there is the usual for these sorts of things (vaudeville/ventriloquist dummy act), and then Ronaldo goes up to “thrill” the crowd with a chalkboard and his conspiracy theories. And then we finally see what Barb and Steven did to Sadie.

Jeebuzz, she looks ready to host the fucking Hunger Games.

Mr. Smiley comes back to check on her and see if she’s ready. This sets off a panic attack in Sadie, because she wasn’t super into doing this in the first place. She just loses it, telling Steven that, much like her mother, he doesn’t seem to notice That she’s not as into things as they are. And her mother just happens to be standing right behind him. They finally talk about how, just because she wants to try some activity, she doesn’t need to start off at the extreme. As for Sadie’s talent show slot?

Steven elects himself tribute in her place.

Final Thoughts:

  • Barb apparently steals the lost mail. And punches umpires. I like her already.
  • Jamie is unaware that no one likes mimes.
  • I cannot imagine the situation in which you’d need “emergency glitter”. That shit gets everywhere as is! I’m fairly sure it was invented by Satan!
