The Internet Archive Has A Brand New Flash Library

I’ve got a big bag of crabs here
I’m gonna put them in my mouth, oh, yes
I’m gonna run around the town on a market day
Everyone’ll look at me and say
I’ve got a mouthful of crabs

We’ve all known for a while that Flash is not long for this world, now. And, with December 31st (the day Flash meets its maker) looming ever closer, there’s little time left to experience the treasures of the 00’s internet.

Or not.

The Internet Archive, proud purveyors of preserved media of the days of yore, have come to the rescue for these priceless gems of internet past. They have an ever-growing archive (currently 849 strong) of flash videos and games. And they sure do showcase the best, and the worst, the format had to offer. And the great thing is, you can play ’em all in your browser, so Flash’s death means nothing.

Utilizing an in-development Flash emulator called Ruffle, we have added Flash support to the Internet Archive’s Emularity system, letting a subset of Flash items play in the browser as if you had a Flash plugin installed. While Ruffle’s compatibility with Flash is less than 100%, it will play a very large portion of historical Flash animation in the browser, at both a smooth and accurate rate.

They’ve got a bunch of those Spongebob flash games Nickelodeon abandoned years ago. They’ve got shitty flash animations and games. Great games, that eventually transcended the flash medium? They’ve got those, too. Weebl’s greatest hits? Of course they have ‘em. Along with countless other nuggets of joy from the past. And things you feel deep in your soul. Granted, some of them desynch, but that’s the price you have to pay for progress, I guess.

Oh, can’t forget this shit, either.

Even now, as it stands, you could spend hours just sifting through the collection. And while the emulation isn’t perfect, it’ll get better over time. So get yourself a nice cuppa, grab hold of your mouse, and enjoy the warm glow of nostalgia.

I’m personally surprised that no one’s bitched about some of these being problematic, yet. I would say I’m proud of you, but I know it’s only a matter of time.
