Bryan Singer Fired from Bohemian Rhapsody

Film shut down until a new director is chosen.

20th Century Fox has let Bryan Singer go from the Queen biopic Bohemian Rhapsody, according to an announcement made by the studio today.

The decision came after a December 1st shutdown of the production. Tensions had been high on the set between Singer and actor Rami Malek (Freddie Mercury), causing Singer to disappear for several days. The film had been shooting in London.

While the spat between Singer and Malek never got physical, Singer did throw something on set over it. Nonetheless, they had apparently patched up their differences and deciding to resume filming. Then, Singer went missing from production post-Thanksgiving, necessitating cinematographer Thomas Newton Sigel to step in and get several days of shooting done in Singer’s absence.

Before the film had even started, Singer had been warned by both Fox Film chairman and CEO Stacey Snider and Fox Film vice chairman and president of production Emma Watts that the studio would not tolerate any unprofessionalism from him. Singer has gained a bit of a reputation for such unexplained disappearances over his last few films, including X-Men: Apocalypse. His latest prolonged absence from the set motivated the decision to dump him from the project.

While the film is estimated to be roughly 2 weeks away from finishing principle photography, it’s stalled without a director. As such, it’s likely Fox will announce a replacement within the next few days. As for Bryan Singer, It’s hard to guess what’s next for him now.
