Netflix Orders The Punisher To Series

The Punisher

Marvel’s Daredevil was an incredibly important show to the Marvel/Netflix corner of the television universe. Its success meant gave both Netlfix and Marvel the confidence to move forward with a number of street-level heroes getting their own shows.

We now have spinoffs based on Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, and the upcoming Iron Fist, all leading up to a Defenders team event somewhere down the line. But now the companies are giving us another series based on The Punisher.

Jon Bernthal took on the role of Frank Castle on season 2 of daredevil and fans took to him right away. The Punisher is a Marvel character that has had a number of big-screen movie adaptations over the years, even before Marvel created their cinematic universe. While I like each for vastly different reasons, Bernthal’s performance gave the character new life.

Executive Producer/Head of Marvel Television, Jeff Loeb said on the news,

“We want to thank the fans who are clamoring for more of Jon’s stunning and powerful performance as Frank Castle from Marvel’s Daredevil.

He went on to say that,

“Now combined with Showrunner Steve Lightfoot’s compelling writing, we’re thrilled to bring Marvel’s The Punisher to Netflix.”

Executive Producer and showrunner, Steve Lightfoot (Hannibal, Casualty) spoke about brining The Punisher to series and what makes him unique, stating that,

“For me, the complexity and unpredictability of Frank Castle make him an incredibly compelling character and I couldn’t be more excited to dive into his world.” He continued by saying, “After watching Jon’s performance in Marvel’s Daredevil I could not be more excited to be working with him to further develop and progress the story of this anti-hero in a show of his own.”

No word on when filming begins, or is The Punisher will somehow tie into The Defenders mini-series.
