RIP Bob Hoskins

Bob Hoskins, the British actor best known for films like Who Framed Roger Rabbit, Super Mario Bros, and Hook, has passed away. He was 71. From The New York Times:

His publicist Clair Dobbs released a statement by his family on Wednesday saying that he had died in a hospital, where he had been treated for pneumonia. No other details were given. A much-honored, Oscar-nominated actor, Mr. Hoskins had announced his retirement in August 2012 after learning he had Parkinson’s disease.

Hoskins was cranking out two or three films a year until his retirement, which is an impressive output for an actor of any age. In addition to the films I listed above, Hoskins delivered terrific performances in Unleashed and Mona Lisa, for which he was nominated for a Best Actor Oscar in 1986. He was a great character actor and a hell of an interview, as you can see in these excerpts from an interview he did with The Guardian in 2011:

Who would play you in the film of your life?
Danny DeVito.

What’s the worst thing anyone’s said to you?
Aren’t you Danny DeVito?

And let us not forget the greatest interview answer ever:

What is the worst job you’ve done?
Super Mario Brothers.

What has been your biggest disappointment?
Super Mario Brothers.

If you could edit your past, what would you change?
I wouldn’t do Super Mario Brothers.
