Breaking news from Planet Duh: Mystique may get next X-Men spinoff

Here’s the least surprising news you’ll read all day: X-Men producers Simon Kinberg and Lauren Shuler Donner are hinting that the next spinoff film to come out of the X-Men universe will center around Jennifer Lawrence’s Mystique (which sounds like a perfume when written out like that).

Via Entertainment Weekly:

With shapeshifter Mystique (Jennifer Lawrence) taking a pivotal role in [X-Men: Days of Future]Past‘s plot, Donner says she’d be interested in taking that character into a solo film. Producer/writer Simon Kinberg (X-Men: First Class) also says he likes the idea of a Gambit spin-off and one for Mystique. Admits Kinberg, “I love what Jen Lawrence has done with her, and I feel like because she is in such a crowded ensemble, there’s so much more opportunity if you were to follow her solo.”

So yeah, this is pretty much a sure thing. Unless you can think of a good reason for them not to try to expand their franchise around a popular Academy Award winner who has already proven that she can shoulder a franchise by herself.

In other news, still no Gambit movie, and no Mr. Sinister.
